8 Benefits of Small Group Fitness Classes

Personal training or big group fitness classes? Did you know there’s a happy medium?

Check out small group fitness training to get the best of both worlds!

One-on-one personal training is a great way to get started on your fitness journey, but it’s not accessible for everyone’s budget. Fitness classes are more economical and can also bring a social component that makes working out fun, but it’s not enough personalization or coaching for some folks. Small group fitness classes are a great in-between option where you can get a lot of assistance figuring out what works for your body, enough attention to feel confident about your form, and allow for the fun and camaraderie of groups while still feeling intimate. Read on to learn about some of the other benefits of small group exercise options.

  1. More personal attention - Working out in a small group versus a big fitness class allows the personal trainer to offer you more corrections and appropriate modifications and progressions. While big exercise classes offer many benefits, the
instructors are not always able to see and correct each individual class member, or tailor the workout to your specific needs. My small group classes are limited to only 3 or 4 people, so I can really get to know you as a unique individual and better cater to your needs!

  2. Variety - Many group fitness classes do the same workouts, multiple times per week, for sometimes months at a time. But in my small group classes, we do different workouts on different days, programs are switched up more frequently, and I always offer progressions and regressions so you can work out at your appropriate level and mix it up as you’re ready. This kind of programming prevents your workouts from getting stale and boring, and keeps you from hitting a plateau in your fitness gains.

  3. Motivation - Knowing someone is keeping an eye on you, and that others are working out right beside you encourages you to keep going and to push yourself harder than you might do on your own, or than you might do if you were hidden in the back of a big class where the instructor can’t see you.

  4. Fun - Yes, you read that right! My classes are filled with cool, down-to-earth people who share your goals and fitness philosophy! We’re all coming from a place of working out to feel better in our bodies, practice self-care, and get super strong, without engaging in toxic diet talk and reinforcing unrealistic beauty ideals. We often get into fun and fascinating conversations about our socialization around body image, gender roles, or what mythical animal we would have as a pet (mine is a unicorn, duh).

  5. Results – Research has shown that people who work out within a program are more likely to stick with it and get results!

  6. Greater Focus – Sometimes people go to the gym but spend way more time than they need to, distracted by their phone or puttering around not knowing what to do. Having a trainer keeps you on task so that you can get your whole workout, from warm up to cool down, done in under an hour. In just two to three hours per week, you can feel stronger, more focused, sleep better, and feel more confident.

  7. More Economical – One-on-one personal training provides the highest level of personal attention and customization, but let’s be real: it’s not in everyone’s budget! Small group workout classes are way more cost-effective, while still providing accountability and the attention you need to succeed in your fitness goals!

  8. Camaraderie – Sometimes things we don’t enjoy doing become really fun when we do them with cool people. Errand buddy anyone? What might feel like drudgery to some folks can become fun and social. Many of my small group class clients end up making friends and even hanging out outside of the studio. And even if you don’t, it’s sometimes just nice to know you’re all in it together!
